Made in India
The history of Bengal’s wooden doll making goes back about 250 years when the region witnessed a migration from the western and northern provinces of India just as the colonial period was beginning and old social and economic orders were changing.Although this craft has disappeared from most of the places across the state,a small village in East Burdwan of West Bengal namely Natungram is trying hard to continue with this old tradition.Reminiscent of Bengal’s wooden architecture, these dolls were an integral part of people’s life, from rituals to historical associations.Nearly the entire village of Natungram practices doll making which is often a collaborative family activity. This artisan’s hub has recently been turned into a tourist destination. The West Bengal govt in association with UNESCO has been working to protect and promote the cultural heritage and has developed a Folk Art Centre at Natungram with lodging facilities for the tourists.
